24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (Holter BP)

⚠️ Attention! The interpretation of results must be performed only by a specialist. The information below is for informational purposes only.

What is Holter BP monitoring?

Daily blood pressure monitoring (Holter BP) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that continuously records blood pressure values over 24 hours under normal daily conditions. It provides a more detailed picture of blood pressure fluctuations than occasional measurements performed in the clinic.

How does it work?

The patient wears a portable device (Holter monitor) connected to a cuff placed on the arm. The monitor automatically takes measurements at regular intervals and records the data for later analysis.

Advantages of Holter BP

  • Detects hidden episodes of hypertension or hypotension.
  • Evaluates daily and nocturnal fluctuations in blood pressure.
  • Analyzes blood pressure response to effort, stress, and medication.
  • Allows adjustment of hypertension treatment.

How is the procedure performed?

  • A cuff connected to the Holter BP monitor is applied to the patient’s arm.
  • The monitor automatically measures every 15–30 minutes during the day and once per hour at night.
  • The patient continues normal daily activities with no major restrictions.
  • After 24 hours, the patient returns to the clinic for device removal.
  • The data is analyzed by a physician to establish diagnosis and adjust treatment.

Indications for Holter BP monitoring

  • Diagnosis of hypertension, especially in case of inconsistent measurements.
  • Evaluation of treatment efficiency for hypertension.
  • Identification of blood pressure episodes related to activities.
  • Diagnosis of arrhythmias associated with blood pressure changes.
  • Estimation of cardiovascular complication risks.

Preparation for monitoring

  1. Continue prescribed medication unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
  2. Avoid intense physical effort and stress before the test.
  3. Wear loose clothing to facilitate cuff application.
  4. Inform your doctor about implanted devices (pacemaker, defibrillator).

How long does the analysis take?

Results are usually available within 3 working days.

The timeframe may vary depending on laboratory workload and data quality.

If technical errors occur, the monitoring may need to be repeated.

Holter BP monitoring is an essential tool for diagnosing and managing blood pressure disorders, offering a detailed view of its variations throughout daily life.
